The Colombo Maritime Museum is situated at Colombo port, maintained by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority. The museum is housed in an Old Dutch building in the historic fort of Galle. The museum was reopened at the Dutch warehouse expanded in a wide area of 40,000 square feet at the Galle fort as the National Maritime Archaeology Museum. The museum displays various items that are of historical significance. It has on display, the objects connected with marine biology and botany along with some beautiful diagrams that show local fishing methods, natural coral beds, deep sea fishes and sea grass beds. Also the marine artifacts such as maps, naval, earthenware, crafts, ropes, barrels, beer mugs, smoking pipes, vast amount of articles including artillery guns and sailor shoes found in underwater explorations are show cased in the museum. Some of them are as old as 800 years. It is an important tourist’s attraction of Colombo.
