Way back in the 1965 's it, was, that St.Martin's Home for Elders came into existence under the care of the Dominican Sisters of Malta and was named after a Dominican Saint St. Martin de Porress. In 1965, as it were, fell into the lap of the Perpetual Help Sisters, when all the Dominican Sisters left our shores, givingover the Creche, Convent and Elders Home to the P.H. Sisters. It was at the cost of much difficulty that this home was built.
Today one sees a landscaped garden, and three, buildings standing distinctly as the Elders' Home. Those who knew it from its inception would recall, that the Home began with only one building on the right, comprising ten rooms, which meant that it was meant only for 10 inmates.
Time rolled by and gradually the Montessori School which stood in the opposite building soon became a House of Formation. Change in the social structure, caused more pushing Sri-Lankans into greener pastures abroad, for better job opportunities, and also due to displacement, children were compelled toleave their mothers, grand- mothers, aunts, in the custody of care-givers. This led to the closure of the Formation House and the building with an upstair, was renovated to accommodate 1 7 more inmates. Thanks to the generosity of Rt. Rev. Mgr, Manik Muthukumara a third building connected the other two in 1 983 and an infirmary was added on by the Inner Wheel Club of Colombo in 1990. Today the Home accommodates 32 Senior Citizens, and provides love and care to all of them giving them the security of protection. Spiritual comfort and accompaniment towards the sunset of their lives.
Maintaining the Home with 32 Senior Citizens of over 70 years of age is no easy task. It's a round the clock commitment; alert and watchful of their welfare, prompt in attending to their needs. Holy Mass is celebrated once month, and the beautiful Chapel allows them to pray at anytime. The Redemptorist Fathers next door are available at all times for any spiritual need. The Volunteer Medical Officer who gives his time and skill enables a monthly check-up, and follow-up of these patients are also made possible. Many organizations and associations occasionally provide entertainment, to cheer-up their drooping spirits. In this way their physical, mental and spiritual needs are all seen to.
The Sisters who look after the Creche are Srs.Consy and Marina.
