We are...
...the Sri Lankadhara Society a Non-Governmental Humanitarian Organisation. We were founded in 1922 by philanthropists, the Late Dr. and Mrs. W.A. de Silva who donated their spacious home situated on three acres of land, at Wellawatte as a shelter for less fortunate girls and women whilst providing for their education and skills training.
Over time, this gesture has evolved into an exemplary initiative of care encompassing a Balika Home for girls between the ages of 5 and 18, a Senior Citizens Home for females over 60 years, Day Care Centre for both males and females, an Infants Home for boys and girls up to 5 years and a Pre-School/Day Care Centre for children.
President's Message
It is with a sense of humility and pride that I contribute this message to our recently launched website. In November 2012, I took over the responsibility to provide leadership for the Society, taking over from the immediate Past President, Mrs. Nimala Perera, who relinquished her duties as President after a continuous period of three years.
The Society has an unbroken 90 year record of service to the less fortunate children and elders and is guided by its governing body, a 20-member Committee.
Our founders late Dr. W.A and Mrs. Catherine de Silva donated this now 92 year old building designed for the purpose of housing the Society's activity hub and the home away from home for many resident girls, past and present. For sometime now this building has been in a state of disrepair and mobilizing resources for its maintenance and upkeep has been a challenging and daunting task for the Management Committee. In this context, it gives me great pleasure to report the tremendous support we have received from several donors in response to our appeal for funds to carry out these repairs, as well as those to meet the escalating costs in providing necessities for our children and elders.
In 2012, for the first time in the history of our home, it gave us great pride to ensure that two of our girls sat the GCE Advanced Level examination, both of whom qualified to enter the University having excelled in all 3 subjects.
I am confident that with the commitment, dedication and active participation of our volunteer committee members and the generous support of our donors, we will be able to overcome all challenges and achieve our objectives, in the future. Like those before us have done so remarkably well, we seek to continue to provide the necessary care and comforts to our elders and girls. In particular, we will provide love, security and a wholesome education for our girls, enabling them to leave us, as self reliant individuals equipped to face the future with confidence.
