New political alliance soon - PM

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday said that the new political alliance Prajathanthravadhi Eksath Jathika Peramuna (National Democratic Front) will be formed within two or three weeks and political parties have an opportunity to join this broader alliance in the future.

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) yesterday called on the Government to adopt a multi-pronged approach for developing the economy by promoting investment, import substitution, and reducing losses of State Owned Enterprises (SOEs) to reign in public expenditure.

I will use my gun – Punchinilame

UPFA Parliamentarian Susantha Punchinilame yesterday (22) said in Parliament that he would not hesitate to use his hand gun issued for MPs if he or his family members’ safety comes into question. Punchinilame made this remark while referring to the recent incident where a herdsman had allegedly attacked him with a sickle when his vehicle had attempted to navigate through a flock of goats owned by that herdsman. The incident was claimed to have taken place in Agbopura, Trincomalee.

The Cabinet has approved Rs. 250 million to compensate farmers whose crops were affected by the ‘Sena’ caterpillar.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has alerted the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom (FCO, UK) that the arrest warrant on former Minister Counsellor Defence of the High Commission of Sri Lanka, Brigadier Priyanka Fernando, issued by the Westminster Manchester Magistrate’s Court, was against the Vienna Convention as it was the result of a private complaint made by a private party.

Sunil Handunneththi appointed COPE Chairman

Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) MP Sunil Handunneththi has been re-appointed as the chairman of the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) in Parliament today.

Five suspects including two US nationals and an Afghan national had been arrested with over 90 kgs of heroin worth more than Rs. 1080 million, at a luxury housing scheme in Kollupitiya this afternoon, Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekera said.
